An algae-rich formula developed for Neocaridina shrimp

GARNELEN4YOU® Neo Algae Sticks are a specialist supplementary food formulated around the nutritional requirements of Neocaridina shrimp.

The product was developed by biologist and shrimp breeder Dr. Philipp T. Baumann as part of GARNELEN4YOU’s modular feeding system. Neocaridina can benefit from a different balance of algae-based ingredients than Caridina, so the algae component has been placed in a separate food that can be added at the appropriate frequency.

Neo Algae Sticks are therefore not intended to replace Carny Sticks or Planty Sticks. They complete the recommended Neocaridina feeding rotation by supplying a concentrated mixture of spirulina, kelp, chlorella and nettle.

Four focused natural ingredients

The formulation contains:

Spirulina
A nutrient-rich cyanobacterium providing plant protein, carotenoids, vitamins and other naturally occurring nutrients.

Chlorella
A microalga that supplies plant protein, omega-3 fatty acids, pigments and micronutrients.

Kelp
A marine algae source of natural iodine, minerals and trace elements.

Nettle
A traditional shrimp-food ingredient providing plant protein, fibre, vitamins and minerals.

Together, these ingredients provide a concentrated source of plant protein, carotenoids, calcium, magnesium, iodine, omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins from groups B, C, E and K.

Intended to support growth and reproduction

The manufacturer developed Neo Algae Sticks to support:

• normal growth;

• fertility and reproduction;

• egg production;

• hatching and juvenile survival;

• development of young Neocaridina;

• a varied and nutritionally balanced feeding routine.

GARNELEN4YOU bases its recommended feeding frequency on research concerning spirulina supplementation in Neocaridina diets, together with its own feeding trials and ongoing development work.

To reproduce the intended balance, the manufacturer recommends feeding Neo Algae Sticks approximately every third feeding, alternating them with Carny Sticks and Planty Sticks.

Part of a three-food Neocaridina system

The GARNELEN4YOU main-food rotation allows each food to provide a different nutritional emphasis:

• Carny Sticks: concentrated animal and plant protein;

• Planty Sticks: a broad mixture of plants, herbs and algae;

• Neo Algae Sticks: the specialist spirulina, chlorella and kelp component.

Using the three foods in rotation allows the keeper to adjust the proportion of animal protein, plant ingredients and algae according to the shrimp colony’s age, reproduction levels and natural food availability.

Neo Algae Sticks are designed primarily for Neocaridina. Carny Sticks and Planty Sticks remain the manufacturer’s principal rotation for Caridina shrimp.

Clean and focused formulation

The recipe contains no fish meal, cereal meal or added chemical ingredients. It also avoids substantial sugar and carbohydrate sources.

The sticks are designed to soften at a controlled rate rather than immediately turning to powder. This gives shrimp time to gather around the portion and graze naturally while helping to reduce unnecessary food dispersal throughout the aquarium.

As with any shrimp food, portions should remain conservative. Remove any uneaten food rather than repeatedly adding more.

Feeding recommendation

Feed approximately 1 cm of stick once or twice per week for every 20 adult Neocaridina shrimp.

Alternate feeding between:

1. Carny Sticks

2. Planty Sticks

3. Neo Algae Sticks

This means Neo Algae Sticks are normally offered every third main feeding.

Adjust the amount according to:

• the number and size of shrimp;

• the amount of natural biofilm in the aquarium;

• the number of juveniles;

• how quickly the previous portion was consumed.

Feed only as much as can be eaten within a few hours. Smaller, more frequent portions are preferable to overfeeding.
